Why PTSD?

The Attach-China website has added a new section on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Why would a web site on attachment disorder add a section on PTSD? The more research we did on Reactive Attachment Disoder, the more we heard therapists saying things like "RAD is a subset of PTSD" or "All children who have attachment disorders have PTSD first" or even "All post-institutionalized children have PTSD!" We became curious as to how PTSD could lead to RAD, and why medical professionals are diagnosing so many Chinese adoptees as having ADD/ADHD or other disorders which mimic PTSD.

In addition, many parents of Chinese children report that their children have night terrors, difficulty falling asleep and other sleep difficulties which don't generally fall under the list of symptoms for RAD - but they do match the symptoms for PTSD. What we found should be of interest to every parent of a post-institutionalized child. The neglect that they endured - what Daniel Hughes calls "The Trauma of Absence" - is likely to impact each child's life. For more information, see Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the LINKS section.
